Costumes are the cosmetic wardrobe layer in Embers of the Uncrowned, and they are built to be taken apart. A costume is not a single skin but a set of separate pieces, so a player can wear the helm from one set over the outfit of another and finish with a third set's cape. Twelve costume sets were available during the Steam Next Fest demo.
Wearing and Mixing
Costumes live in the second tab of the Bag menu, opened with the I key. Because sets are split into parts, the wardrobe is a parts bin rather than a list of outfits, and NEXON positions that mixing freedom as the point of the system: the store description frames a costume choice as a flash of colour deliberately set against a dark fantasy world. Face and body sculpting is handled separately by Character Customization.
How Costumes Are Obtained
Route | Detail |
|---|---|
Gameplay | Certain quests award costumes directly as you progress the campaign. |
Costume Coins | A dedicated currency spent at the shop in your settlement. Costume Coins drop from various in-game content, including Abyss Cocoon waves in the open field. |
Gold | The same settlement shop also stocks costumes purchasable with the standard Gold currency. |
Events | Limited sets are attached to seasonal or campaign events. Several demo sets were event-only. |
Sets Named in the Demo
Six of the twelve demo sets were named in NEXON event material. Demo rewards were reset before the official launch build, and NEXON has stated that the launch-delivered event costumes will also be obtainable through other future events, so none of these should be read as permanently missed.
Costume Set | How It Was Earned |
|---|---|
Lunar Frenzy | Full-set reward for the Disciples of the Mad Moon event. Awarded piece by piece as the Moonlight Madness Helm, Outfit, and Cape. |
Enchanting Aurora | Cumulative reward at 5 completed daily challenges in the Harbinger of Vengeance event. |
Black Carnival | Cumulative reward at 10 completed daily challenges. |
Sacrificed Lamb | Cumulative reward at 20 completed daily challenges. |
Demon Warrior | Reward for The First Embers event, earned by logging in on any two consecutive demo days. Shown as concept art and delivered at official launch. |
Ocean-Blue Nostalgia | Wishlist campaign reward, granted inside the demo to players who wishlisted before it opened. |
The three Lunar Frenzy pieces show how set acquisition can be split across separate objectives: the Helm came from liberating all regions, the Outfit from defeating the Man-Faced Insect, and the Cape from clearing the dungeon on Hard difficulty. A player who cleared only two of the three walked away with a partial set, which the mix-and-match system then made wearable anyway.
Costumes and Monetization
Cosmetics are where NEXON has said its business model lives. The team has repeatedly committed that Embers of the Uncrowned will not sell anything that affects character stats, and the demo login screen carried the same promise in the form of a statement that the full version will not sell paid offers affecting character progression. Costumes and Mounts are the visible expression of that split. Pricing, bundle structure, and whether a battle pass or seasonal store exists at launch have not been announced. See Monetization for the wider picture.
What Is Not Published
The full twelve-set demo catalogue, the number of parts in a set, whether costumes are shared across characters on an account, whether class or gender restricts what can be worn, and the Costume Coin rates for each activity are all unpublished. Whether costume appearance can be applied over gear as a transmog layer, rather than replacing it, has also not been stated.
