Weapon Refinement

Weapon Refinement is the core upgrade system in Crimson Desert. Every weapon and armor piece has 10 refinement levels. Refining raises base damage or defense and is the primary way to keep gear relevant across regions.

Refinement is performed by a blacksmith at any smithy.
The first blacksmith the player meets is Turnali in northern Hernand, at the central starting town.
Additional blacksmiths appear across Pywel as the story progresses. Refinement progress is per-weapon and carries between smithies.
Refinement Level | Metal Weapons | Wooden Weapons | Leather / Fabric Armor |
|---|---|---|---|
1 to 4 | Iron Ore, Copper Ore | Timber, Fine Timber | Thin Hide |
5 to 10 | Bloodstones plus Abyss Artifacts | Bloodstones plus Abyss Artifacts | Bloodstones plus Abyss Artifacts |
Abyss Artifacts drop from Abyss-tier content. Stockpile them before committing to high-level refinements.
Instead of spending refinement materials, you can sacrifice an exact duplicate of the weapon or armor piece to push it one level higher. This is useful for items you already own multiple copies of, such as common drops.
Reinforcement (performed at the anvil) is a separate, free temporary defense boost. It resets after certain events, so players typically max Reinforcement before every major fight.
Abyss Gear is an enhancement layer applied after refinement. Socket Abyss Cores into sockets created by a witch to add elemental damage, attack speed, critical hit, life steal, or AoE-on-hit effects.
Witches unlock the ability to create sockets on weapons. See Witch Workshops.
Refine every new weapon to level 4 before leaving the region that introduced it.
Max Reinforcement before major fights.
Push a build-defining weapon to level 5+ once you have a steady supply of Bloodstones and Abyss Artifacts.
Unlock sockets through a witch and slot Abyss Cores that match your playstyle (damage core for a DPS loadout, utility core for a support build).
