Added Abyss corruption effect on enemies from Will Powers interview
The Abyss is a mysterious realm floating above the continent of Pywel. Its influence reaches the surface through fallen fragments that carry both power and corruption. A growing mystical imbalance within the Abyss threatens to push the world toward chaos, making it central to Crimson Desert's story.
Fragments of the Abyss fall from the sky islands to the lands below. They are scattered across Pywel and serve as the main resource for unlocking and upgrading abilities.
Will Powers described encountering a fragment during a typical play session: "I see a glimmer in the distance and that's an Abyss artifact... they give you power as well as kind of corrupt your enemies." This dual nature is important. The Abyss is not purely beneficial. The same fragments that make Kliff stronger also affect the enemies in the surrounding area. The exact mechanics of enemy corruption have not been detailed, but it suggests that Abyss-touched regions may have stronger or altered enemies.
Fragments are also magical and "have puzzle elements to it," per Powers. See Abyss Dungeons for the floating-island puzzle content and Artifacts for the progression system they feed into.
Traces of the Abyss discovered throughout Pywel open up fast travel locations, serving as anchors between the surface and the Abyss realm.
Artifacts are powerful items connected to the Abyss's power that unlock and upgrade skills. They come from quests, combat, and hidden corners of the world. See Skill Trees for how they fit into character progression.
In Hernand, Kliff must infiltrate Hernand Castle. He changes into Hernandian Banquet Attire to blend in, retrieves an artifact from the alchemist's room, and uses it to open an Abyss Gate. Walking through the portal transports Kliff to a digital-like realm leading to Valtarra.
Powers also mentioned diving "back down to Pywel from the Abyss above" toward the Greymane camp, which suggests that once you gain access, you can move between the Abyss and the surface regularly.
At the heart of the Abyss lies the Library of Providence, filled with bookshelves. Here Kliff meets Alustin, the enigmatic keeper. Alustin reveals that dark forces seek the Abyss's power, plotting to open a gate to "pure, raw, untamed power." The mission to restore balance was once Gian's mission, now passed to Kliff.
After meeting Alustin, Kliff meets White Crow the Witch outside the Library. She is a figure clad in white who serves as a bridge between Providence and the rest of the world. She gives Kliff the Crow Wings ability, a glider that allows him to traverse great distances. "Here, take these wings. It's time to return."
Floating landmasses suspended above Pywel. Players reach them via hot air balloons and the Crow Wings glider. The islands have their own enemies, puzzles, and rewards unavailable on the surface.
Will Powers hinted at a threat beyond the Black Bears: "There's something much more insidious that's happening here that's risking the entire fabric of the entire continent itself." The Abyss appears to be connected to this larger danger. Dark forces plot to open its gate, and if they succeed, "ruin is sure to follow." Kliff cannot face this threat alone. As Alustin tells Naira: "Gather all of the Greymanes."
