Added that the publisher has filed nothing about the transfer, the conversion of the ArcheAge S publishing contract to Align Studio, and a re-dated check on the console storefront attributions
11Kakao Games is a South Korean game publisher founded in 2016 as a subsidiary of Kakao Corporation. They are the global publisher for ArcheAge Chronicles and previously published the original ArcheAge in Western markets from November 2021 until its closure in June 2024.2233Company History4455Kakao Games was established in 2016 to handle Kakao Corporation's gaming portfolio. The company listed on the KOSDAQ exchange on September 10, 2020 (stock code: 293490). Their flagship publishing deal is with Pearl Abyss for Black Desert Online, one of the most commercially successful Korean MMORPGs in Western markets.6677XLGAMES Acquisition8899On February 11, 2020, Kakao Games signed an agreement to acquire a 52.97% controlling stake in XL Games (XLGAMES) for approximately KRW 120 billion (roughly $100 million). This brought the ArcheAge intellectual property and development team directly under Kakao's umbrella, giving them control over both the legacy game and ArcheAge Chronicles' development. The acquisition eliminated the developer-publisher friction that had complicated ArcheAge's history under Trion Worlds and Gamigo.10101111ArcheAge Publishing12121313Kakao Games took over Western publishing of ArcheAge and ArcheAge Unchained from Gamigo in November 2021. They promised synchronized global updates matching the Korean version. During their tenure, they converted Unchained to a $9.99/month subscription model and ultimately announced the NA/EU shutdown in April 2024. The game's Japanese servers (under publisher GameOn) closed in December 2024, and Korean servers shut down on March 6, 2025.14141515Financial Context16161717Kakao Games' 2025 consolidated sales were approximately 465 billion KRW (roughly $320.9 million), a 26% decrease year-over-year. Their Q4 2025 report showed an operating loss of approximately 13.1 billion KRW ($9.09 million). Management cited the lack of new blockbuster releases and increased development investment as challenges.18181919Both ArcheAge Chronicles and Chrono Odyssey (another Kakao-published title) have been delayed multiple times. The ArcheAge Chronicles release was pushed from its original 2025 target to Q4 2026 through successive quarterly reports. At the second-quarter 2026 earnings announcement in August 2026, that window was reframed as a Steam Early Access launch, with the full release no longer expected in 2026. The financial pressure to deliver these titles is significant given the company's recent losses.20202121Changing Role on Chronicles During 2026222223-The publisher's position on ArcheAge Chronicles shifted through 2026 and is currently unsettled. The Steam listing now names XLGAMES as both developer and publisher, the official website moved to a developer-hosted domain carrying an XLGAMES copyright line alone, and second-quarter earnings materials described the game as self-published by the developer. The PlayStation and Microsoft storefronts still name Kakao Games Corp. as publisher and have not been updated to match. Both readings therefore have a first-party surface behind them, and the question is better described as in transition than settled. Both console listings were re-checked on 12 September 2026 and neither had changed.24242525This does not mean the publisher has stepped away from the franchise. In September 2026 XLGAMES disclosed the sale of the ArcheAge intellectual property, along with the separate ArcheAge S development business, to Align Studio for roughly 39.2 billion won, effective 27 October 2026. Align Studio is a newly formed developer funded by Kakao Games. The practical effect is that the ArcheAge trademarks and copyrights, including marks covering the ArcheAge Chronicles name, move to a company the publisher backs, while the Chronicles development project itself remains at XLGAMES. See XL Games and Development Timeline for the detail.26262727The publisher continues to hold its controlling stake in the developer, so the arrangement is a reorganisation inside a group rather than a separation between two unrelated companies.28+29+The transaction is being disclosed from the developer’s side only. As of 12 September 2026, Kakao Games had made no regulatory filing about the sale at all: the 8 September disclosure and its 9 September correction were both submitted by XLGAMES. One consequence sits inside the deal itself. The existing ArcheAge S development and publishing contract between XLGAMES and Kakao Games converts into a contract between Align Studio and Kakao Games, so the publisher keeps its publishing position on that title while the developer on the other side of the contract changes. Align Studio is led by Kim Kyung-tae, who ran ArcheAge S at XLGAMES.
