Detailed True Qi resource article
True Qi (真气, Zhen Qi) is the central combat resource in A Whisper of Fall: Jinyiwei. Unlike health and stamina, which function in straightforward ways, True Qi creates a risk-reward dynamic that shapes how every fight plays out.
True Qi increases when the player lands successful attacks or counterattacks (rebounds). It decreases when the player takes damage or when their own attacks are blocked by enemies. The bar exists on a spectrum between empty and full, with specific thresholds that trigger different effects.
Above 50% — Stamina regeneration functions normally. The player has full access to their defensive toolkit.
Below 50% — Stamina regeneration is halved. Dodging and blocking become significantly more expensive in practice, since the player recovers resources slower between exchanges.
Empty (0%) — The player can activate a focus state to channel and restore health. This requires standing still and channeling uninterrupted, which is dangerous mid-combat but can be a lifeline during lulls between enemy attack patterns.
Full (100%) — Finishing techniques become available. These are powerful special attacks that consume the entire True Qi bar.
The system pushes players toward aggressive play. Landing attacks builds True Qi, which maintains stamina, which lets you dodge and block, which keeps you alive to land more attacks. The cycle rewards offense. Playing defensively — taking hits, having attacks blocked — drains True Qi, halves stamina, and eventually leaves the player without resources for either offense or defense.
The focus-heal mechanic at 0% True Qi acts as a safety valve. It prevents total death spirals by giving damaged players a way to recover health, but the channeling window is tight. Against aggressive bosses like Deng Yang, finding time to channel requires reading the boss's attack patterns carefully.
Rebounds (parries) are the most efficient way to build True Qi. A well-timed rebound both fills the player's bar and damages the enemy's posture. Players who master the parry timing can maintain high True Qi throughout a fight, keeping stamina at full and unlocking finishing techniques repeatedly.
