Cao Zhong (曹忠) is a Centurion (百户, Baihu) of the Jinyiwei and one of three named opponents across the combat-focused public builds of A Whisper of Fall: Jinyiwei shown over July and August 2026.

Role in the Demo

Cao Zhong is positioned as a sparring bout against a fellow officer rather than as a hostile pursuit. In the July 2026 build he opened the named-opponent run, fought before Deng Yang. The larger build shown at the start of August 2026 added a Squad Commander ahead of him, so he became the second of three, fought after Li Nu. In both builds the encounter serves to introduce the parry, guard-break, and posture mechanics that the later fight then tests under pressure.

The build offered three difficulty tiers, so the same encounter scales across beginner, intermediate, and advanced settings. Because that build excluded story and exploration, no narrative context for Cao Zhong has been shown: his relationship to the protagonist and to the wider case has not been described in any public material.

A Centurion (百户) sits below a Thousand-Man Commander (千户) in the Jinyiwei hierarchy. Historically the title denoted an officer responsible for roughly a hundred men. Deng Yang, the demo's last and hardest opponent, holds the senior rank of the three. The named fights run in ascending rank order, Squad Commander then Centurion then Thousand-Man Commander, and difficulty climbs with them.

Status

Only the name, rank, and demo placement have been confirmed. No moveset breakdown, stat line, appearance description, or story role has been published, and none should be assumed from the historical office alone. Both builds that featured him excluded story content, so the omission is a property of what has been shown rather than an absence in the game.
