Setting |
Kaatri is not someone who needed magic to survive a fight. The premise turns on the fact that she was already dangerous and took the pact anyway, because what she wants cannot be reached with a weapon. Official material states that she makes a dangerous pact with the witch Tasha in order to find someone she has lost, and that her search leads her into a land where strange whispers promise power and anyone can become a monster. She is described as having to risk her very soul to reach the raw magic she needs to get what she wants.
The person she is looking for has not been named, described or shown. Their identity is one of the central unanswered questions of everything shown so far.
Kaatri's toolkit is both halves of her history. She casts from a grimoire of spells and rituals, and she can summon otherworldly melee weapons, each described as carrying its own power and tactical value. Developers have said that the ability to mix melee and magic is the key thing they wanted to give players, and that the optimal approach is to use magic to put an enemy at a disadvantage before closing the distance. See Combat and Spells.
Her magic is also how she moves and how she investigates. She leaps enormous distances, steps through grates as mist, lifts objects whose gravity she has cancelled and pulls things to her from across a room. See Exploration.
Kaatri is a written character rather than a blank slate. The studio head has said she has a written morality and gave a concrete example: the player cannot walk into a village and start killing people, because it would not make sense for her. Whatever freedom the world offers, it is Kaatri's freedom rather than the player's.
Kaatri is the face of the game's live presence. An official cosplay tour built around her opened at gamescom in Cologne from 26 to 30 August 2026, where three cosplayers performed the role in rotation across the five days. Three further stops have been announced without locations, one in late 2026 and two in 2027.
