The Hidden Ones is an adaptation of the Chinese martial-arts franchise The Outcast, known in Chinese as Under One Person (一人之下) and animated as a donghua. This page explains the relationship between the game and its source, and which parts of the source the game is built on. It is a context page: the wiki documents the game only, not the manhua, donghua, or anime.
This wiki covers the game The Hidden Ones. Lore that exists only in the original series is background. It is not necessarily in the game, and it is never presented here as confirmed in-game content.
The game does not retell the source franchise scene for scene. It tells an original story set in the same world, with cinematic cutscenes, voice acting, and multiple playable perspectives across its chapters. The world, the cast, and several famous arcs are drawn from the source, but the way they are arranged and what actually ships is specific to the game. When the source and the game disagree, the game is the authority for this wiki.
At a high level, the source is about ordinary-looking people in a modern-day, urban China who secretly wield superhuman martial and spiritual powers. These powered people are the Outcasts, written in Chinese as Yiren. The game adopts this premise directly: the titular Hidden Ones are these Outcasts, and the setting is a contemporary supernatural China layered with ancient Eastern myth and philosophy such as Taoism, Yin-Yang, and qi. For how the game presents this, see World and Setting.
From the source franchise, the game draws on the world and its supernatural-martial-arts premise, the framing of fighting styles around the Eight Secret Arts, a set of characters, and famous storyline arcs reproduced as in-game chapters. The most prominently shown example of an adapted arc is the Fulfilled storyline, which the game presents as a confrontation against an enemy faction; see The Fulfilled.
Source Element | How the Game Uses It |
|---|---|
The world and Outcasts premise | Adopted directly as the game's setting and the meaning of the Hidden Ones |
The Eight Secret Arts | Used as the framing for distinct fighting styles; see The Eight Secret Arts |
Characters | A set of source characters appear; the confirmed in-game roster is on Characters |
Famous arcs | Reproduced as story chapters, such as the Fulfilled storyline |
The credited contributors include people associated with the original series who are noted as helping with the game's story development, though the exact romanized spellings of those credits have not been locked down in official materials and so are left out here.
A large amount of lore exists in the source franchise that has not been confirmed to ship in the game. Names, backstories, schools, and movesets that are famous in the source are not automatically in the game. This wiki treats anything that has not been shown in the game's trailers, store materials, official site, or test builds as source-only background. It is recorded for recognition, not written up as confirmed in-game content, and it is hedged as belonging to the original series wherever it is mentioned.
The Hidden Ones shares its English name with an unrelated downloadable expansion for a different, well-known historical action game. They are entirely separate products with no shared characters, setting, or content. Nothing from that other product belongs on this wiki.
