Lore
Zhao Yun (also known as Zhao Zilong) is one of the most celebrated warriors from the Three Kingdoms period and a loyal general of Liu Bei's Shu Kingdom. He is famous for the Battle of Changban, where he single-handedly fought through Cao Cao's forces to rescue Liu Bei's infant son.
In Primaera's reimagined setting, Zhao Yun retains his identity as a fearless warrior of the Shu Kingdom. His dragon-themed abilities reflect the mythological connection between Chinese warriors and dragons as symbols of power and authority.
Abilities
Roar of Protection (Passive)
Zhao Yun's strength increases as his health decreases, implemented through two power thresholds:
HP Range | State | Bonuses |
|---|---|---|
33% to 66% | Dragon in the Field | 10% damage reduction, extended dash range, +1 spear strike on Skill 2 |
0% to 33% | Dragon in the Sky | 20% damage reduction, further extended dash, +2 spear strikes on Skill 2 |
This passive creates a dynamic where Zhao Yun becomes more dangerous the closer he is to death. Skilled players can maintain low health intentionally to maximize damage output, while the damage reduction helps survive in the danger zone.
Sky Splitter
Zhao Yun surges forward with a powerful lance thrust, dealing heavy physical damage. The dash distance increases at lower HP thresholds, making it both a gap-closer and an escape tool. At maximum enhancement (Dragon in the Sky), the extended dash makes Zhao Yun extremely mobile.
Storm Piercer
Zhao Yun throws his spear in rapid consecutive strikes, dealing physical damage with each hit and healing himself slightly per strike. The number of strikes increases at lower HP thresholds: four strikes at full health, five at Dragon in the Field, and six at Dragon in the Sky. This ability is his primary sustain tool and DPS ability.
Thunderbreaker (Ultimate)
Zhao Yun leaps into the air and crashes down with a thundering lance strike, knocking down enemies in the area for one second. The physical damage scales heavily with bonus physical attack. This ultimate provides burst damage, crowd control, and a dramatic entry into combat.
Playstyle Guide
Tip | Details |
|---|---|
Manage your health | Zhao Yun's passive means lower health equals higher damage. Learn to ride the edge between power spikes and death. |
Use Storm Piercer to sustain | The self-healing on each spear strike helps maintain survivability at low HP. |
Sky Splitter for mobility | Use the dash aggressively to engage and defensively to escape. The extended range at low HP makes it versatile. |
Thunderbreaker for burst | Open fights with the ultimate for the knockdown, then follow up with enhanced Storm Piercer at low HP for maximum DPS. |
Team Synergy
Zhao Yun's risky playstyle benefits from support heroes:
Cai Wenji (Support): Healing keeps Zhao Yun alive in the danger zone without fully healing him out of his power thresholds.
Da Qiao (Support): Portal recall can save Zhao Yun when he overcommits at low HP.
Zhao Yun is one of the recommended starter heroes alongside Lu Bu and Hou Yi. While his low-HP mechanic adds complexity, the damage reduction passive makes him more forgiving than it might appear.
