Fix Liu Cixin collaboration scope: was 'inspiration co-creation' around Poetry Cloud, not direct world-building authorship
Honor of Kings: World has had one of the longest and most closely watched development cycles of any action RPG announced in the 2020s. From its initial reveal in late 2021 through multiple closed beta tests, high-profile showcases, and regulatory milestones, the game's road to launch stretched across nearly five years. Throughout that period, TiMi Studio Group steadily expanded the scope of the project while maintaining a consistent eastern fantasy identity rooted in the Honor of Kings universe.
Honor of Kings: World was formally announced in October 2021 during a Tencent Games event. The reveal trailer showed a fully 3D open-world action RPG built on Unreal Engine 5, a significant departure from the top-down MOBA that the Honor of Kings brand was known for. Alongside the announcement, TiMi Studios confirmed a collaboration with renowned science fiction author Liu Cixin, best known for The Three-Body Problem trilogy. Liu Cixin brought his short story "Poetry Cloud" into an inspiration co-creation partnership with the project, lending thematic ideas that influenced the game's blend of mythology and science fiction.
Between 2022 and 2025, TiMi Studios conducted multiple rounds of closed beta testing (CBT) in China. These tests progressively expanded the playable content, starting with limited combat demos in the early phases and eventually opening up larger sections of the open world with cooperative multiplayer enabled. Each beta cycle brought notable improvements to the combat system's responsiveness, visual fidelity, and network performance. Community feedback from Chinese beta participants directly influenced changes to the Flow style switching speed, boss encounter difficulty tuning, and quality-of-life features such as the quick-gather party function.
In March 2025, TiMi Studios brought Honor of Kings: World to the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco for a behind-closed-doors presentation. Attending press received roughly 90 minutes of hands-on time with a PC build running at 4K resolution with ray tracing. The GDC showing marked the first time Western media had direct access to the game, and the resulting coverage was broadly positive. Developers also held a Q&A session where they discussed their plans for post-launch content cadence, the cosmetic-focused monetization philosophy, and the goal of eventually offering every Honor of Kings MOBA champion as a Flow style.
At Tencent's annual SPARK conference in April 2025, Honor of Kings: World received a dedicated segment that included a new gameplay trailer and an extended look at cooperative raid content. Pre-registration officially opened during the event, and the game quickly accumulated millions of sign-ups across China and Southeast Asia within the first week. The SPARK presentation also confirmed several quality-of-life features that beta testers had requested, including expanded controller support and improvements to the AI companion system.
In September 2024, Honor of Kings: World appeared during Apple's iPhone 16 launch event as a showcase title for the A18 Pro chip's gaming capabilities. The segment demonstrated the game running natively on the new iPhone hardware with high graphical settings, reinforcing the cross-platform ambitions of the project. The Apple partnership was a significant endorsement of the mobile version's technical quality and introduced the game to a global audience outside of gaming-specific media.
The game's global coming-out moment arrived at Gamescom 2025 in Cologne, Germany. A trailer debuted during Geoff Keighley's Opening Night Live ceremony on August 19, 2025, followed by the first public hands-on demo at booth B040 in Hall 9. The Gamescom demo featured a four-player cooperative boss fight that demonstrated the dual-class switching system and Flow style mechanics. Press coverage from WCCFTech, VGC, UnGeek, and RPGSite was overwhelmingly positive, with multiple outlets comparing the combat favorably to Monster Hunter and Devil May Cry.
In October 2025, TiMi Studios released a trailer on Bilibili confirming a Spring 2026 launch window for the Chinese market. Shortly after, in January 2025, the game received its official approval from China's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA), clearing the final regulatory hurdle for domestic release. The NPPA license number confirmed the game's eligibility for monetization in the Chinese market.
Honor of Kings: World launched in April 2026 across PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), iOS, Android, and with cloud gaming support. The global release through Level Infinite followed the Chinese launch, bringing the game to players worldwide. The nearly five-year development journey from announcement to launch reflected TiMi Studios' commitment to delivering a polished product that could stand alongside established action RPG franchises while offering a distinctly eastern fantasy identity.
