Online Multiplayer

Initial version
Grand Theft Auto VI will include an online multiplayer component, continuing the GTA Online model that has been running since GTA V's launch in 2013. Very few official details have been revealed, but some concrete information has emerged through legal proceedings and executive statements.
Court documents from an October 2025 legal case involving Take-Two Interactive confirmed that GTA VI's online mode will support at least 32 simultaneous players. This is double the 16-player sessions in GTA V's online mode at launch (later expanded to 30 for certain activities). The exact structure of sessions, whether it's a persistent open world or instanced lobbies, has not been detailed.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed during earnings calls that the current GTA Online (the GTA V version) will continue to be supported after GTA VI launches. This means the existing GTA Online will run alongside GTA VI's new online component, at least initially. The degree of overlap or migration between the two services is not known.
Internal Take-Two descriptions, referenced in financial filings, describe GTA VI's online component as "designed to generate revenue for years into the future." GTA Online has been one of the most financially successful online services in gaming history, generating billions through its Shark Card microtransaction system. Whether GTA VI's online mode uses a similar monetization approach has not been confirmed.
