Survival in Frostrail is built around one threat above the others: the cold. The game is set in a frozen wasteland where an unrelenting cold has consumed the land, and The store page describes it as a ruthless survival FPS in which every choice is a matter of survival. The armored train is the only reliable source of heat, so most survival decisions come down to how long the crew can stay away from it and what they bring back.
The store page states the rule plainly: heat is survival, and players should ration it wisely. The frost creeps into the player's bones, and every step away from The Train is described as a gamble. The original reveal post gave the same advice from the other side, telling players not to stray too far from the train because they do not want the cold to catch them.
This creates the central trade-off of an expedition. The store text frames it as a choice between risking death for precious supplies or staying safe and going without.
Weather is part of the danger. According to the store description, the blizzard blinds, slows and suffocates anyone caught in it. FakeFish has not published exact numbers for how much visibility or movement speed a blizzard removes.
Players craft clothes, food and weapons to stay alive, according to the reveal post, and the store page adds hunting to the list of activities alongside scavenging and crafting. Clothing has grown over development: the May 2026 update added multiple new clothing sets. The update did not name the sets or list their stats. For how gear is made, see Crafting and Scavenging.
Equipment has to be maintained. In the May 2026 development update FakeFish reworked the item repair system around dedicated repair workstations, with the stated goal of making gear maintenance feel more immersive and intuitive. Doors on the train can also be repaired by hovering over them and choosing the action with the mouse scroll wheel, according to the official demo FAQ.
The same May 2026 update listed relics under its survival changes. Relics are hidden in dungeons and can be activated aboard the train for temporary buffs during the pilgrimage. See Exploration and Dungeons for where they turn up.
The ruins are haunted by Revenants and other eldritch horrors, and the Steam content descriptor notes that the game involves fighting and killing enemy creatures, naming wolves and humanoids as examples. Ammunition is scarce, and the reveal post presents avoiding unnecessary fights as a real option. See Combat for more.
Dying does not wipe a player's inventory outright. The official demo FAQ explains what happens:
Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
Player dies | The inventory stays on the body, and the player can return to it to recover the items |
Items dropped or left behind | They may be permanently lost |
Stuck in the tutorial | A Suicide button respawns the player at a safe place |
The FAQ's advice is to keep the most valuable gear on your person. More on respawning and saving is on the Saving and Progression page.
The store lists Survival, Open World Survival Craft, Inventory Management and Resource Management among the game's user tags. The game can be played alone or in co-op with up to four players, covered on Multiplayer and Co-op.
As of October 2026, FakeFish has not published whether Frostrail tracks hunger, thirst or body temperature as separate meters, how fast the cold drains a player, which foods exist, or what stats clothing sets provide. This page will be updated when the developers share those details.
