Saving and Progression

Frostrail saves automatically rather than on demand. The game is split into levels, and a save happens at each level transition, when the train passes through a tunnel. Progress carries from one level to the next, and players get stronger by crafting better equipment and upgrading their train. This page collects what FakeFish has confirmed about saving, death and progression as of October 2026.
The official demo FAQ answers the common questions:
Question | Answer from the demo FAQ |
|---|---|
How is the game saved? | Automatically, at each level transition, when the train passes through a tunnel |
Can I save manually? | The current way to save is to complete a level by passing through tunnels with the train |
Does passing through a tunnel save the game? | Yes, this is currently how saves work |
Can a host resume a multiplayer session? | Yes; the game starts at the beginning of the level where the session stopped |
Since tunnels are the only save points the FAQ describes, a resumed game starts at the beginning of a level rather than partway through one. The FAQ uses the word currently in its answers, so the system may change during development. See The Train for more on traveling through tunnels.
When a player dies, their inventory stays on their body, and they can return to it to recover the items they were carrying. Items that were dropped or left behind may be permanently lost, so the demo FAQ advises keeping the most valuable gear on you. A player stuck in the tutorial can use the Suicide button to respawn at a safe place.
The May 2026 development update introduced progression that carries between levels, along with new levels that have multiple exit points. In December 2025, FakeFish said it had been laying the foundations for campaign progression, and that it planned to improve the in-game tutorial and flesh it out as the start of the game's story. The May 2026 update added a brand-new tutorial level with additional tutorial objectives.
Confirmed sources of progression include:
Crafting better gear: advanced weapons, gear and tools become available to craft as players progress, according to the demo FAQ (see Crafting and Scavenging)
Upgrading the train: reinforcing its walls, crafting weapon stations, upgrading the engine, and adding carriages, crafting stations and storage
Relics: found in dungeons and activated aboard the train for temporary buffs (see Exploration and Dungeons)
The Steam store lists Steam Achievements among the game's features. As of October 2026, the achievement list has not been published.
The store's Early Access notes say that more progression is planned for the full version, naming varied loot, crafting new items and weapons, and upgrading the train. FakeFish expects Early Access to last about a year and has said it will share planned additions through roadmaps.
The host can resume a multiplayer session, and the group restarts at the beginning of the level where they stopped. See Multiplayer and Co-op for creating and joining sessions.
As of October 2026, FakeFish has not announced manual saving, multiple save slots, cloud save details, character levels or skill trees, or whether progress from the demo or playtests carries over to Early Access.
