11House Harborwell is the player character's noble house in Embers of the Uncrowned. As a collateral branch of the royal family, the Harborwells led the pro-monarchy faction in the Kingdom of Aldrein with their potent bloodline magic and generations of accumulated wealth and honor. They were the strongest pillar supporting the throne, and their seat at Goldenhaven was the wealthiest port in the realm. Then in a single night, the elven invasion shattered the line.2233Quick Facts445566FieldDetailFactionPro-monarchyRelation to Royal FamilyCollateral branchSeatGoldenhaven, on the Valdorion PeninsulaSigilGolden PhoenixBloodline MagicConfirmed (rare bloodline mages, including the Book of Rites wielder line)Status at Story StartFallenSurviving HeirThe player (illegitimate child)77The Family8899Lord Valdemar Harborwell10101111Valdemar Harborwell was the Grand Lord of Goldenhaven and the foundational figure of the pro-monarchy faction. He led the city to its long prosperity, championed an early peace treaty with the elves, and was the first lord to sense the invasion. He was killed by Bella at Red Anchor Harbor in Towerstead, his death so gruesome that not even a fragment of his body remained to be buried.12121313Leopold Harborwell, Eldest Son and Heir14141515Leopold Harborwell was the firstborn and the rightful heir. A masterful bloodline mage even by Harborwell standards, he could forcibly imbue others with power through the Book of Rites, the family's defining relic. Paralyzed at age fifteen but unshaken, he commanded the absolute trust of Goldenhaven from his wheelchair. Bella severed his head at the succession ceremony.16161717Lucian Harborwell, Second Son18181919Lucian Harborwell was the second son, the kinder of the player's elder brothers. Where Leopold was the heir-apparent, Lucian was the brother who stayed close and walked side-by-side with the youngest. When the elven raid plunged Goldenhaven into chaos, he did not flee, and was slain defending the family seat.20202121The Player as Heir22222323The protagonist is the illegitimate heir of House Harborwell. The premise positions the heir as someone who left the family behind and built a life as a mercenary, surviving on contracts and personal skill rather than birthright. When the story begins, that mercenary is drawn back by fate to the place the family broke.24242525The youngest sibling encountered the Executioners, Spectral Blades, and Stormbringers in their mercenary career, eventually choosing one of those paths before returning home. That class choice is also the player's class choice at the start of the game.26262727Bloodline Magic and the Book of Rites28282929The Harborwells were renowned for their bloodline magic, with Leopold's ability to imbue others through the Book of Rites standing out even within the family. The Book is the crown jewel of House Harborwell and bestows immense power and knowledge upon its reader; in Leopold's hands, that power could be granted to retainers, raising a force from the very gift others were born to.30303131Bella took the Book of Rites from Leopold's grip after killing him. The relic is now in elven hands, and recovering it is implicitly tied to the player's long-term Bloodline Awakening progression.32323333The Phoenix Banner34343535The sigil of House Harborwell is the golden Phoenix. Tales of the Uncrowned #1 describes the moment the city fell as the day the phoenix banner of Goldenhaven collapsed in flames. The image is reflected in Valdemar's armor (silver, emblazoned with the golden Phoenix and worn under a crimson cloak) and in the Harborwell colors of orange and gold worn by Leopold and Lucian at the succession ceremony.36363737The Phoenix sigil naturally frames the player's campaign: a house consumed by flame is also a house that rises from ashes. Rebuilding the settlement and reclaiming the Valdorion Peninsula is, in iconographic terms, raising the Phoenix banner again.38383939Political Significance40404141As a collateral branch of the royal family and the head of the pro-monarchy lords, House Harborwell was the keystone the throne depended on. Lord Valdemar coordinated the pro-monarchy faction in the kingdom's grand lord politics, and Eslyn (raised from a fallen retainer house) crushed conspiracies of neighboring grand lords from his side. Goldenhaven was both a wealthy port and a political nerve center.42424343With the Harborwell line broken, the pro-monarchy faction has no head, and the elven advance accelerates through the rest of the kingdom. Whoever rebuilds the House also rebuilds the political block; restoring the family is a kingdom-scale act, not just a personal one.44444545The Restoration Campaign46464747After a narrow escape from Goldenhaven, the player takes up the mantle of the last of the Harborwell bloodline. The campaign begins from a humble camp and grows through Settlement Building, Domain Bosses, and Raids. Companion recruitment, beginning with Eslyn, is part of repopulating the House. Reclaiming the Book of Rites and confronting Bella again are confirmed late-campaign threads.48484949Related50505151Valdemar HarborwellLeopold HarborwellLucian HarborwellEslynBook of RitesGoldenhavenKingdom of AldreinThe Elven InvasionBella
