Role
Dorian Kieken is AI Director at CD Projekt Red, the studio building The Witcher IV. He announced the appointment in February 2026 and described the job as being responsible for the company's AI vision and strategy. The remit covers the company as a whole rather than one project, and the studio has not published a breakdown of which individual The Witcher IV systems fall under it.
Background
Kieken spent roughly eight years at BioWare. He joined as a producer, worked on Sonic Chronicles, and went on to hold development director roles and help found the company's Montreal studio. His credits from that stretch include Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, downloadable content for the latter included. He left in 2015 and spent the following eight years running an artificial intelligence company he founded, AI Redefined, shortened to AIR, which was later acquired by CM Labs. Describing the move to CDPR in his own words: "After eight years of building memorable RPGs at BioWare and eight years of building cutting-edge AI solutions at AI Redefined, it is finally time to bring all of that together in my new role at CDPR as AI Director, responsible for the company's AI vision and strategy."
What the Role Does and Does Not Cover
The studio has drawn a hard line around how it uses the technology, which is the clearest guide to what this job actually involves. CDPR has committed to not using generative AI for content creation, and joint CEO Michal Nowakowski has said flatly that AI is not going to be making the studio's future Witcher games. What the company does use it for is internal productivity tooling and machine learning. Kieken's brief sits on that side of the line, so his work belongs to engineering and strategy behind the scenes rather than to anything a player will encounter as authored content. Any description of him personally directing the behaviour of specific monsters, NPCs, or crowds in The Witcher IV would be going beyond what the studio has said.
Significance
Kieken's hiring is part of a broader pattern of CDPR recruiting combat and AI specialists from top studios to build The Witcher IV's gameplay systems. The combat development team also includes veterans from Guerrilla Games (Horizon series), Santa Monica Studio (God of War), and Warhorse Studios (Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2).
