On 17 September 2026 Hideo Kojima closed the XBOX Tokyo Game Show 2026 Broadcast with a recorded statement covering OD and PHYSINT. For PHYSINT it was the first presentation under Xbox, one week after the change of publisher, and it did three things: it announced Bill Skarsgård in the lead role, it released a second poster, and it gave the first progress statement since the cancellation notice of June 2026. This page covers the PHYSINT segment only. Nothing said about OD applies here.
Item | Detail |
|---|---|
Date | 17 September 2026 |
Setting | A recorded video statement by Kojima, roughly four minutes long, placed at the end of the XBOX Tokyo Game Show 2026 Broadcast. Xbox's own recap described it as the broadcast's closing surprise |
Announced | Bill Skarsgård in the lead role, described as the player character in the game |
Released | A second poster, made from a photograph Kojima took of Skarsgård and Charlee Fraser; a standalone clip of the statement on Xbox's channel |
Written record | A Kojima Productions press release in English and Japanese, and an Xbox post, both the same day |
Not given | Platform, release date, character name, premise, engine, gameplay |
The lead role
Kojima introduced the announcement as "the actor for the lead role: the player character in the game", then named Bill Skarsgård. He said the two were "long-time fans of each other's work" and had "decided to embark on this new adventure together", and that "there are still many exciting cast announcements to come in the future". The studio's press release repeated the casting line and added that the costume fittings, scans and camera tests with Skarsgård and Fraser earlier in 2026 had given him "tremendous confidence in the direction of the project". The character Skarsgård plays has no published name, and no story function has been described for any of the four announced actors. Their pages are on Cast.
The second poster

The poster is a square image built from a photograph Kojima said he took of the two actors during that session. It is a photograph of performers rather than an image from a build, and it is the first PHYSINT image of performers or characters since the September 2025 key visual.
Element | What the poster carries |
|---|---|
Billing | Bill Skarsgård, Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, Minami Hamabe, in that order |
Title treatment | The PHYSINT logo with "A Hideo Kojima Game" set vertically beside it |
Tagline | "The next Cold War begins" |
Credits line | Scenario: Hideo Kojima. Production: Hideo Kojima. Character and mechanical design: Yoji Shinkawa. Game design and direction: Hideo Kojima |
Logos | Xbox, MetaHuman, 3Lateral, Kojima Productions |
Rights lines | A 2026 copyright for Kojima Productions Co., Ltd. and Hideo Kojima, and an Epic Games trademark notice covering the MetaHuman and 3Lateral marks |
Two of those elements are firsts. The credits line is the first time anyone other than Kojima has been credited on the project: Yoji Shinkawa, for character and mechanical design. And the tagline is the first thematic phrase PHYSINT has published. It is a tagline, not a premise: nothing has been said about the setting, period or conflict it refers to, and this wiki does not infer one. The MetaHuman and 3Lateral marks credit character technology partners and do not name a game engine; no engine has been announced. The poster and the clip are items ten and eleven on Media and Assets.
What Kojima said about progress
The statement also carried the first status update since the change of publisher: "The project continues to make steady progress. We're also making progress on casting, talent scans, and collaborations with outside creators." He added that his "vision of the final form became much more solidified" after the costume, scan and camera sessions with the two actors, and called PHYSINT "the culmination of more than 40 years of my career: a project that will redefine 'action-espionage,' unbound by any existing genres in digital entertainment". He also said he had visited the Xbox offices in Redmond earlier in 2026 and that the two companies were working together on two new IPs. The remarks name areas of work, not milestones; see Development Status. His statements are collected on Hideo Kojima on PHYSINT.

Also in the statement
The first half of the recording was an update on OD, a separate Kojima Productions game also published by Xbox. It is out of scope for these pages and nothing in it describes PHYSINT. The earlier studio event at which the first three actors were announced is covered on Beyond The Strand Reveal, and the full chronology is on Announcement and Reveal History.
Archive
The statement is available as a standalone clip on Xbox's channel, titled as the reveal of PHYSINT's lead cast member, and inside the full broadcast archive, whose Japanese 4K upload is age-gated. The studio's press release remains on its news page in English and Japanese.
