Initial version (2026-09-08)
Behaviour Interactive is the Canadian studio developing Exterminauts. Founded in 1992 and headquartered in Montreal, it describes itself as Canada's largest independent video game studio, with around 1,200 employees and additional offices in Vancouver, Toronto, Rotterdam and the United Kingdom. Alongside its own titles it has spent more than three decades working as an external development partner and providing production and co-production services.
Its flagship original franchise is the asymmetric horror game Dead by Daylight, which the studio says has reached nearly 70 million players since its 2016 launch. That is studio pedigree only: no system, character or piece of content from it appears in Exterminauts, and the two games share nothing but a developer.
The studio has positioned Exterminauts as its most ambitious original IP to date. Its vice president and executive producer, Louis-Pierre Pharand, described the goal as making a game about science-fiction blue-collar workers who get the job done even when things go wrong on a galactic scale, and said the project exists at this scale because of the publishing partnership behind it.
Exterminauts is published by Level Infinite in partnership with a global publishing team called TEAM SHOOTER & CREATIVE. That team is a publishing group working with Level Infinite, not a co-developer, and should not be listed as a second studio. Its publishing lead, Hakan Hu, described the studio as having built a distinctive blue-collar science-fiction world around chaotic, highly cooperative gameplay.
The collaboration has a documented timeline. First discussions took place around 2021, when the studio presented its concept, and the two sides aligned quickly enough that the project formally started in 2022. It is described as the first full-scale collaboration between the two companies. Development is handled entirely by the studio, with the publisher contributing market and user research back to the development team.

At the time of the reveal the creative director described roughly five years of work on the game, while the combat lead gave four years in a separate interview at the show. Both figures are on the record and are reported here as given.
Only a handful of names and roles have been made public. Official video material identifies the creative director as Vincent and the senior producer as Nicolas, both at the Montreal studio, without publishing surnames. A combat lead appeared in the studio's gamescom recap. Beyond the two executives quoted in the announcement, no full credits have been released.
Asked at gamescom why the game centres ordinary workers, the developers said cooperative games are full of soldiers, superheroes and world-saving adventurers but comparatively short of ordinary labourers, and that they were drawn to stories about ordinary people doing extraordinary jobs. They named four influences: Men in Black, Ghostbusters, Armageddon and Alien. The common thread they identified is characters doing dangerous work for a wage, with a boss or a client to answer to. The stated intent was to make a game about clocking on at a hostile workplace rather than going to war.
That thinking runs through the mechanics as much as the tone: contracts, repairs, division of labour and wages all shape how a shift plays out. See Gameplay and Contracts.
