Initial version (2026-09-15)
Thothmek the Chronomancer is the first of the two playable Necrons Commanders in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV. He is the figure the faction is introduced through, and the one whose stirring wakes the tombs beneath Planet Kronus.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV has not released yet. Everything on this page reflects information published before launch and may change.
A Chronomancer is a Necron schemer who bends the flow of time. Thothmek is presented as an ancient one, leading the deathless legions out of a sixty-million-year slumber to reclaim a galactic empire the Necrons never stopped considering theirs. The developers frame his motive plainly: like every other commander drawn to Kronus, he wants the power buried there, in his case for his dynasty’s wider war effort.
The licensor’s introduction adds the scale he operates at. Thothmek commands a massive Necron fleet, so the faction does not simply climb out of the ground: it converges on Kronus from orbit as well as from the tombs. The framing is territorial rather than opportunistic. The battleground world once belonged to the deathless dynasties, and Thothmek intends to take it back regardless of how many Space Marines, Orks and Skitarii stand on it.
Thothmek fights as a controlling Commander rather than a frontline one. He wields a suite of chronomantic powers that manipulate time itself, warping it around nearby Necrons to shield them while loosing raw energy to suppress enemies that try to close the distance. That pairs naturally with the faction’s resilience: the Power Matrix already makes Necrons harder to kill on their own ground, and Thothmek layers protection on top of it.
His opposite number is Lord Ahmnok, the second playable Necron Commander, who is described as far less inclined to manage a fight from a distance. Between them a Necron player chooses between a controlling, time-warping leader and a direct, violent one. See Commanders for how Commanders work across every faction.
The Necrons enter the war because of a signal. They picked up a mysterious transmission originating from Kronus, a world they had long assumed held nothing more of interest for them, and Kronus turns out to be a dormant tomb world. Thothmek’s awakening is what turns a forgotten planet into the centre of a four-way conflict, and it puts him directly at odds with the Adeptus Mechanicus expedition digging for the same buried technology. See Story and Setting for the wider thread and Campaign for the missions it runs through.
